Caring for a parent

Sometimes when a parent has Huntington’s Disease, there might be some extra things young people are asked to do that other young people don’t have to do!

You might have to look after your parent with HD, feed them, dress them, help them cope emotionally, help take them to appointments, help your other parent cope ... it can be a huge task!

It can be a particularly huge task if a parent with HD has behavioral problems or mood changes that upset you, confuse you or frustrate you! You may need someone to talk to if this is happening, you should never have to cope with this alone.

Caring can be hard work, and there may be times you really don’t want all these extra responsibilities, you just want to be a teenager! There may be times you enjoy caring for your parent too and you get to share some special times together.

It's important to care for yourself too, hang out with friends or talk to someone who understands, and make time to do the things you love to do!

This site is for all young people who are caring for someone in their family with an illness or disability:
