Genetic Testing
|
Now that scientists have discovered exactly what the fault is in the HD gene, it is possible to be tested to see if you have the changed gene. You have to be 18 to have the test and it involves giving a blood sample. The process takes about 3 months and requires talking to a genetic counsellor about the process, your feelings, and any concerns you may have prior to being able to take the test. If the counsellor has genuine concerns about your ability to handle the results, it may mean more talking and working through the issues before you will be allowed to take the test. Deciding to take the test is a very personal decision, some people want to know and others prefer to live with not knowing. It's up to each individual to think about what it means for them and how the knowledge of having or not having the changed gene will affect their life. Talk through your thoughts with family and friends before making any decisions, and remember you can change your mind about it at any time, even after you've given your blood sample. Don't rush into anything until you've explored all the options and are ready to make an informed decision. There is more detailed information on testing in the 18+ section. |
